Keeping up with what is going on in your hometown is not always as easy as you might think it would be for people. We all lead pretty hectic lives these days, working from morning until evening and trying to fit in all of our other responsibilities somewhere in between before we go to bed at night. This leaves precious little time to keep up with what is going on right in our own backyard. It can be very easy for you to lose touch with your local community, but more people today are trying to make an effort to stay connected. To stay on top of what is going on, it is helpful to know just where you can go for things like Silver Lake news so you are aware of what is happening in the area. Staying Involved in Your Area One reason to keep up with local news is so that you and your family can stay involved in the community. With so much going on in our daily lives, it can be easy to get disconnected from your town. You might lose sight of what is going on with local politics, community events or what businesses are new to the area or doing different things. When you stay abreast of the local news, you can find out what is happening in your area so you can get involved in important activities. It can also give you a guide to events that may go on so that you can note them on your calendar and make plans to attend. Getting Important Information Finding a source for Silver Lake news is easier than you may think. Instead of searching all over the Internet to track down stories, events, and happenings, there is one website that brings it all together for the community. Read MoreSilver Lake’s “Bates Motel” — The complete transformation of the dilapidated Sunset Pacific Motel (Bates Motel) into a conceptual art piece is in process as a French artist, Vincent Lamouroux sprays the entire building – as well as the adjacent palm trees and billboard – in a thick coat of opaque limewash. Projection, which is described as a “temporal intervention into an iconic piece of LA’s architectural history and urban lore,” will last two weeks, with an opening date scheduled for April 26. The two-week long project was conceived by Vincent Lamouroux, who used a similar concept in a Paris park where a grouping of The owners of the three-story motel at the corner of Sunset Boulevard and Bates Street plan to follow up the art exhibit by demolishing the structure to make way for one of three apartment towers. But an official for the developer said they have given Lamoruoux permission to use the property as an art project as long as the necessary permits are obtained. What’s the point of Projection? Says the press release: Just as the Silver Lake neighborhood itself has transformed radically in recent years, an continues to evolve, so to will the artist’s iteration of the motel embody a transformation, surrendering and passage; the white surface of its facade will be a symbolic invitation to project our ideas about both its mythic past and its indeterminate future. The limewash is described as an “ecologically safe” material that will eventually erode and fade away. You can check out Vincent Lamouroux’ recent work here ...
Read MoreWe’re totally obsessed with pretty much everything that Materials & Applications does, but this month is different. If you haven’t checked out their current exhibit in Silver Lake you’re totally missing out. Take a break one evening or night this week to check out DOMUS an installation by D.V. Rodgers and team. DOMUS is experimental anti-seismic architecture incorporating spatialized seismic sound and light that challenges our response to and perception of earthquakes. What: DOMUS by D.V. Rodgers – Materials & Applications is an outdoor exhibition space that is visible from the street 24 hours a day. Entry is free but donations are appreciated! When: Literally 24 hours a day Where : 1619 Silver Lake Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 9026 DOMUS an installation by D.V. Rogers and team On view until Spring 2015 DOMUS DOMUS is an experiential, anti-seismic architecture installation that challenges our perception and response to earthquakes in Los Angeles. The project is currently exhibiting at Materials & Applications (M&A) in its outdoor exhibition courtyard and is open free of charge to the public from 10am – 10pm every day of the year. DOMUS is constructed from a low-cost open hardware Hexayurt shelter system designed by Vinay Gupta and utilized heavily in Black Rock City during the annual Burning Man Festival. DOMUS is constructed from THERMAX (CI) insulation panels and bi-directional filament tape, a temporary construction technique durable up to 12 months. As with all M&A installations, this two story high extended Hexayurt design was constructed with a team of volunteers. Suspended in the center of DOMUS is a matrix of undulating lights and sounds that pulse, retreat, tremble, and vibrate in response to two curated seismic databases, creating a stunning visual and aural immersive experience. DOMUS submerges visitors into the sensorial datascape of two historical events: Haiti’s 7.0 earthquake on January 12, 2010 and the 6.3 earthquake in Christchurch on Feburary 21, 2011. The LED chandelier centerpiece suspends from an 18’ tall ceiling as the structural ribs taper into eight points, suggestive of gothic arches. Compositions performed in DOMUS are created by Ryan McGee in collaboration with D.V. Rogers, and use seismic recordings to translate waveform data to the compositional data collected by IRIS Wilbur.
